5 sublime Ibiza beach restaurants to head to in winter

Winter sun, sea and sangria

It may be winter but that doesn't mean you have to give up your fix of paella on the beach. Here is a selection of feet-in-the-sand lunch options you can enjoy all year round. See our restaurant guide for more places open during the winter.

La Escollera

La Escollera, set at the northern end of the dramatic Es Cavallet beach oozes class. Make your way through the salt plains and arrive at this long beach of white sand with rolling waves. Take a seat on one of the palm-shaded terraces and take a moment to enjoy the complementary glass of Cava whilst you look out to sea across to the island of Formentera.

You will notice little touches such as the fresh flowers on the tables and the cushions to make you comfortable for a long, lazy lunch. There is often a DJ playing Balearic beats for a total chill-out vibe.

The cosmopolitan menu is displayed on a blackboard which is set down by your table while you deliberate between shoulder of lamb or fresh fish baked in salt. Whichever you choose, be sure to leave room for one of the ‘to die for' desserts. The tarte tatin is sensational. If the weather is not kind, the restaurant is equally inviting inside and with the full length glass windows you won't miss out on the views. There is even an open fire to warm you up.

Restaurante Sa Caleta

This traditional, family-run restaurant was once a fishermen's shelter and offers a cosy indoor dining experience as well as outdoor tables with views overlooking the beach. Take a walk along the distinctive red clay cliffside to the Phoenician settlement that dates back to the seventh century BC to imagine the first urban settlement on the island. Don't be surprised to see locals smearing the clay over their bodies before diving into the sea to rinse it off. They swear by its health-enhancing properties.

Back at the restaurant, choose from the typical Ibizan cuisine on offer, including monkfish with seafood sauce, different types of paella or the delicious fish stew known as bullit de peix. After lunch you must try the famous Café Sa Caleta which is a hot coffee flavoured with a heady mix of alcohol, fruit and spices set alight at your table in a distinctive clay bowl. Delicious!

At White Eivissa you can experience a completely laid back atmosphere whilst sat with your toes wriggling in the sand. A glass of bubbly and a warm welcome on arrival get you in the mood for lunch in the winter sunshine.

On the main menu you can choose between a range of traditional paellas, grilled meats and pasta but there is also a great value Menú del Día fixed-price menu which offers a choice of three or four starters, mains and desserts, including bread and alioli. There is always a sushi selection as well as vegetarian options so it's a great excuse to try things that you wouldn't normally have.

The three-course menu including a drink is just €16 on weekdays and €20 on weekends when there is live music and entertainment too.

Atzaro Beach Club

At the entrance to the wide, sandy beach at Cala Nova is a great family-friendly option for lunch in the winter: Atzaro's beach club outpost. The whitewashed tables are dressed with splashes of turquoise which match the colour of the sea perfectly. Sit down, take a deep breath and soak up the view across to the island of Tagamago whilst the little ones enjoy the variety of activities at the Kids Corner which is available from Wednesday to Sunday.

Tuck into the king prawn and squid croquettes and then share a typical dish of fideuá which is similar to Paella but made with noodles instead of rice. A plate of fishy noodles in front of the Mediterranean. What could be better? Well, if you happen to be here on a Saturday, you can enjoy all of that with the addition of live music too. Relaxation is compulsory.

Yemanja

Just around the coast at Cala Jondal you will find Yemanja serving up tasty dishes every day of the year. This white, pebbly beach takes on a different vibe in winter. Summer's VIP beach clubs full of the rich and famous empty out to give way to a more relaxed and rustic atmosphere. Park easily and make your way through the bar to be met by the inviting tables set right on the sand surrounded by the pine-clad hills. Winter is a great time to appreciate the crystal clear waters and the slower pace of this beautiful beach.

Start with a selection of breads with the tasty local alioli (garlic mayo) before sampling fresh fish or sharing a tasty paella with seafood and shellfish. It's pet-friendly too so you can take your pooch along to enjoy a walk on the beach before he falls asleep under your table dreaming of tit-bits.
