We’ve recently heard on the Ibiza grapevine about two very different methods of communication

We’ve recently heard on the Ibiza grapevine about two very different methods of communication being used on the island.

Our schools have now started to use SMS messages to tell doting parents about the misdemeanours of their special little pupils. Last year over 8,000 messages were sent, in perfect Spanish we might add, and such is the volume of traffic that the messages are now standardised and computer generated. Favourites are of course;

‘Your child has not attended class’

‘Please check your child’s hair as there is an outbreak of nits’

‘Your child has either not washed for 10 days or is decomposing’

and so on ad infinitum.

As a total contrast, a campaign by ONCE, the Spanish Association for the Blind, has seen three restaurants in Ibiza, Sa Llesca, Ca n’Alfredo and Es Rebost de Can Prats, have their menus produced in Braille. So from now on, a series of raised dots on a page can translate into something delicious accompanied by a nice glass of Rioja.

The next stage in this process is to get the Highway Code produced in Braille for the thousands of visually impaired motorists on the island!
