Review: Freak Show Featuring M.A.N.D.Y. at La Plage June 29th

Music, freaks, and fashion come together.

I headed over to La Plage with the intention of just having a couple drinks and listening to some good music with friends. This was just a free chilled out party on the beach with Get Physical's M.A.N.D.Y. headlining, right? I couldn't have been in for more of an amazing surprise when I arrived.

The first thing I noticed were performers everywhere I turned. Crazy costumes, people walking on stilts, contortionists and acrobatics bending in ways I didn't think was physically possible, burlesque dancers teasing you with their every move. I even noticed a man dressed in drag who I must jealously admit had better legs than I did. Was this a circus? Or a dance party on the beach? Apparently a combination of both, as the official name of the party was appropriately titled “La Tour presents Freak Show” The entire venue was decorated to enhance the freak show theme, and even a Funktion 1 system was especially brought in to provide top-notch sound for the party.

The surprises didn't end there, though. As I started getting into the beats of the techno that was playing, I was soon approached by a girl giving away shots. Yes, they were actually free. Free alcohol of any kind at a party is pretty much unheard of in Ibiza! She actually approached me several times, so I had been there only about an hour and had three free shots already. There was also someone giving away Spanish style fans that I've noticed are quite popular at clubs in Ibiza. As I walked around I noticed there was a little mini boutique selling fashionable, but expensive swimwear, clothing, and jewelry. I was admiring a beautiful swimsuit coverup, and was contemplating buying it until I saw the hefty price tag of €200...

Just when I didn't think there could be anything more to this party M.A.N.D.Y. began playing while simultaneously a fashion show began. Ultra-skinny, gorgeous models in six inch heels began strutting down the makeshift “runway” modeling barely there swimsuits. Providing a perfect and stunning backdrop to the fashion show was a daring pyrotechnics show.

This party may not have been at a venue like Space or Amnesia, or as widely known as Cream or We Love, but it's these smaller and lesser known parties with just the prefect vibe, that make Ibiza the special place it is. This event is definitely in my top three favorites since arriving in Ibiza a month ago.
