Ibiza Gossip Girl Ch. 5 - Ibiza Town Life

More trials and tribulations with Lady GG.

As I sit here in full make-up and an outfit suitable for the Ritz, sipping my martini, I couldn't help but wonder... Yeah right! If only. I'm actually sat in 'Coffee and Books' on Avenida Ignacio Wallis in Ibiza Town, it's on the main road from San Antonio (opposite La Caixa bank), on the corner of Calle de Vicente Serra i Orvay and it's such a great place to work from. I think it only opened this summer and does delicious, and the cheapest, coffees in town. It's kitted out like an American diner, all red leather booths and vinyls on the wall. It also has a library at the back which is where I'm sat now, amongst rows and rows of really cool books mainly in English and Spanish. There's never anyone in here so I've resumed my usual position, kicked off my flip-flops and gotten comfy. It's my hidden gem in not so hidden a place, and with speedy and efficient wifi, what more do you need?! The only flaw? It tends to play really slushy 80's ballads. At present I'm listening to Diana Ross and Lionel Richie's ‘Endless Love' reliving the shame, oh the shame, from being turned away last Monday night from Swedish House Mafia at Pacha.

A word of warning people. If someone puts you on the guest list, remember their second name! What a schoolboy error that was... Confidently, I strutted up to the door of Pacha with a few of my holidaying, in awe of supposed power, pals. In ten years I've never been knocked back from a club so to discover I wasn't down was somewhat of a shock to say the least. I'd had email confirmation; we'd all brought our id... ‘Who's list are you on?' a smart looking no nonsense doorman asked. ‘Aherm...' Good question, one of my promo pals had sorted it. ‘What's their name?' he demanded. ‘XYZ...' ‘XYZ who?' ‘Urm, ahhh...' (she's Czech, so I'm sure wasn't Smith, or Jones) ‘What does she do?' ‘She's one of the girls.' ‘Promo girls don't get any guest list. Next.'

Ouch. Tail between legs, apologetically to my friends, whose looks of awe had now turned to looks of pity, all dressed up with no super club to go, I drowned my sorrow's with a quick shot in bar Grial, mainly as it was the first bar I came to, then swiftly retreated to the comfort of Locura in Ibiza Town's port to seek out some familiar faces. Situated just off Place del Parque it's a small cosy joint which is a popular hangout for locals and the inner Ibiza workers. By this I mean the ones that have been coming here years, want a reasonably priced beverage, to listen to some cool tunes, and are guaranteed to bump into fellow friends and veterans. It's owned by Dave Phillips a long standing resident DJ for We Love at Space, who often jumps on the decks and has live DJ's most nights including fellow Spacer's Ian Blevins and Daisy Heartbreaker.

Another quiet night at Locura

I've taken 2 Many DJs here and they fell in love with the place within minutes. It's Ibiza's own late night version of Cheers. So what better place to cheer myself up? Which it did, or perhaps that was the cocktails, and sympathetic shots...

I redeemed myself by wangling the VIP treatment at Ibiza Rocks on Wednesday to see electronic/dance old hand Fatboy Slim. Ibiza Rocks is usually more targeted toward the eighteen to herpes San Antonio generation, but as Norman is an island favourite, and it was his first gig in Ibiza for some time, and I believe since ditching the booze, the place was packed and he put on a fine, barefoot (he'd abandoned his shoes on entering the stage) show. I overheard him telling someone Ibiza is his love island as it's the place he met his wife Zoe Ball and they celebrated their tenth anniversary here also.

The pals who were visiting me this week are getting married in Ibiza in September, they're unaware of my column for Ibiza Spotlight and told me they'd found Ibiza's number one go-to website, a great source of info for everything from hotels, to the best restaurants, and for other useful hints and tips. We aim to please.

Until next week.
