New Traffic Laws in Ibiza

Spain's new traffic laws come into force in Ibiza and the rest of the country today

Spain's new traffic laws come into force in Ibiza and the rest of the country today, so if you're thinking about hiring a car on your holidays here, read on.

One rule that hasn't changed is that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a big no-no and the limit is much less than many other European countries – they reckon a small beer is about the limit.

New rules which have been introduced outlaw fiddling with your GPS whilst driving, parking in a disabled space without the correct permissions becomes a serious traffic offence, driving with illegible number plates is now an offence, as is cycling at night without lights or reflectors.

All fines have been increased across three categories; light, up to €100, serious, up to €200 and very serious, up to €500. Remember that there's a discount for paying the fine within 20 days and this has now been increased to 50%.

The number of offences for which points can be deducted from the driving license has been reduced from 27 to 20 and these include drink driving, dangerous driving, racing, driving against traffic (especially for British and Irish drivers), using radar detectors and reversing on a motorway, not using a seat belt and using any equipment which could distract attention from driving!
