Interview: Sander van Doorn

Sander van Doorn talks to us about his latest compilation From Dusk Till Doorn 2011.

Spotlight: You were recently awarded the prestigious Silver Harp award. Tell us what that award is and how it feels to be recognized.

Sander: It's basically a recognition of musical accomplishment for artists in Holland. It's a Dutch award, but not just Dutch talent receive it, so yes, It's such a huge honour to have my name on that list!

When did you realize you wanted to be a DJ and producer?

After I went out a few times in Holland, I would say when I was about 16 or so. I really felt like that was the path for me and I began doing everything I could to follow my passion.

You're known for pushing boundries and experimenting with different genres. How would you describe your sound?

I just play what I think is good, and hopefully people are receptive. So far, so good!

What has been your most memorable encounter with a fan?

There have been quite a few, but lately a lot have been crying and shaking when they meet me. I can't understand why anyone would be nervous to meet me!

Tell us about your new album ‘Dusk Till Doorn 2011'?

It's a double compilation that's just come out yesterday! I mixed the album and it's a companion to my Dusk Till Doorn nights. So far, people's reactions have been really positive and I will be touring on the album through the summer!

From Dusk Till Dorn 2011 has a wide variety of sounds on it and is not genre specific. What was your inspiration behind the album?

Well it's really a companion to my Dusk Till Doorn clubbing concept. In the same way that I build my club night up, starting off a bit more housey or progressive, I really work to build the right musical journey for the listener. Each track was carefully chosen for the way it worked with the music around it, the way I could transition it and of course, the energy that it brought! I started out with about 90 tracks and the result of many months of perfecting the music is representing on Dusk Till Doorn 2011!

The double album is like being able to take a bit of the Dusk Till Doorn club experience home. You can see more about the DTD concept here

How has the sound evolved from the first Dusk Till Doorn compilation?

It's really about the experience for me and building the album as I would when I play at one of my Dusk Till Doorn nights. This part of the concept hasn't changed.

Do you have any upcoming plans for another artist album since the highly successful Supernaturalistic in 2007?

Yes, my artist album is nearly done and will be out at the end of the year! I'm very excited about it! You'll have to ask me more in a month or two!!

What are your plans for Ibiza this summer?

Well, this year I'm playing quite a bit more! I love Ibiza, the whole island is all about clubbing, and people really appreciate what you're doing.
You can defintely expect some surprises musically, along with a few new SvD tracks dropping! That's all I can say :-)
