Elephant Dung, Ibiza and World Fair Trade Day

What do World Fair Trade Day, Ibiza and Elephant Dung have in common?

There are some days when I just think Ibiza can't shock me anymore. It is and has been the party capital of Europe and after witnessing that and all the facets of it, what could possibly shock the senses?

Being offered Elephant Dung Paper did it.

I popped in to San Miguel to catch up with one of the powerhouses behind the island's Fair Trade movement, Valeria Cova of the very beautiful and strikingly unique Algomas shop (“Something More” and it's no idle boast).
Standing proud, enthusiastic and keen to help, Valeria speaks openly about trying to enhance awareness of Fair Trade products on the island. The setting is perfect, her shop a cosy, carefully selected display of some of the best products available under the Fair Trade label. Everything from beautiful throws to children's toys, to stunning kitchen gadgets and Fair Trade food products.

Her passion is infectious and it is heartening to see that some of the locals are starting to understand and appreciate her drive, getting actively involved to support the shop and indeed the forthcoming World Fair Trade Day celebration being held in San Miguel Plaza on 06th May.
The event sounds spectacular and inviting. Everyone is welcome and entertainment has been considered for all who do attend.

There are some great children focused activities, live music for those who just want to soak up the atmosphere (including a stunning gospel choir at 12 lunchtime)
However what really got my attention was the offer of free food and drink. Yes, ok, the free bit was lovely but I liked the generosity of offering something so one may understand it better, judge and appreciate it without cost. Cakes, coffees, even Fair Trade mojitos are on offer on the day.

So, the Elephant Dung Paper? Well, I have a thing for notebooks and I spotted some gorgeous ones on a bookshelf in Algomas – Valeria was thrilled to tell me these were made from elephant poo. Boiled for 36 hours first, of course. I allowed myself a grin – whom could I spoil with an elephant poo notebook?
