Walking Ibiza is a fabulous day out with island man, Toby Clarke. Born on the island but raised abroad Toby returned to our shores and is a key figure in promoting the island to visitors and islanders alike.
In 2010 he got the whacky idea to put just 1 euro in his pocket and see if he could walk the entire Ibiza coastline. Some 140kms and eleven days later he completed his mission, and was so inspired by the experience that he decided to offer day walks to others.
Oh, for the record, he came home with the 1 euro in his pocket – the island and its people had looked after him every step of the way.
I popped along for my first walk a few months ago, camera in hand. It was a walk open to all (Toby also takes private bookings) and about 15 or so of us, all ages, nationalities, levels of fitness set off to explore 10km around the islands salt flats and the stunning Las Salinas.
Pre-walk Toby sent out a comprehensive email, advising of walk difficulty, what to bring, and letting everyone know dogs were welcome. He also suggested car-sharing which many of us do.
What really got my attention was Tobys passion and knowledge, ensuring the experience was rewarding. Each walk incorporates a point of interest and I’ve finished every walk either knowing more about the vast range of island herbs, history or ecological issues generally.
However the walk doesn’t just finish and everyone climb into cars and zoom off until the next one a fortnight later. Toby always arranges a venue for lunch. Now it’s time to sit back, enjoy a drink, kick off your shoes and relax with fellow walkers.
The public walks, held fortnightly (the next one being tomorrow!) are free. Toby asks for a donation to cover his time (he pre-walks the route beforehand, just to make sure everything is as it should be) and I’ve never known anyone not feel it’s worth a good contribution.
Toby can also be hired privately and if groups are of 4 people of less, will even do a pick up and drop off. Private walks are just 150 euros and it’s an inspiring way to enjoy the island for 3-4hrs.
So next time you’re sat back, wondering what to do or where to go, Walking Ibiza could be a more perfect answer than you can imagine.
Final image is one of my favourites - Toby enjoying a very well deserved beer after a great days walk! For link to more information, see below.
All images were taken across some of the walks I have done with Walking Ibiza. A glorious way to get to know this island intimately.
